Lyme Disease Maps – Where to Find Lyme in the US

According to reports from the US Centers for Disease Control, almost all cases of Lyme disease in the US last year occurred in just a handful of states. The following thirteen states accounted for some 95% of cases:

Although many physicians still fail to report Lyme disease cases it is a nationally notifiable disease and was the 7th most common notifiable disease in 2012 in the US. Lyme disease bacteria are transmitted via tick-bite and Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector borne illness in the US. Babesia, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis are other types of vector borne illnesses, many of which can occur as coinfections to Lyme disease.

The hotspots for Lyme disease in the US are the northeast and upper Midwest, as shown in the Lyme disease map of cases from 2012 below. Climate change, animal migration, and the encroachment of humans into more rural landscapes are all affecting the spread of Lyme disease, however.
